Te Nehenehenui Chair, Peter Douglas, has today announced a number of key appointments and transitions across the wider governance group.
“The Board extends its sincere thanks to Craig Barrett (Mangatoatoa Pā) for his valuable leadership, service and enduring contribution to Te Nehenehenui as the Chair of Ahuahu Group Limited, and acknowledges the strong foundations established during his tenure which has been marked by disciplined governance, strategic leadership and a steadfast commitment to intergenerational wealth and prosperity. His term as Director and Chair of AGL will conclude on 31 March 2026, having served in the role since 2021. Craig led the establishment of Ahuahu Group Limited for Te Nehenehenui, including reporting for two election cycles and the transition from the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board. Craig’s commercial and business experience and leadership strongly contributed to steady and strong growth including advancing the aspirations of Te Kawau Rukuroa, particularly through the strategic pou of Whakaranea. Craig’s stewardship has seen the continued development of a diverse, resilient and sustainable investment portfolio..”
Bella Takiari-Brame (Te Kūiti Pā, Maniaroa Marae, Rākaunui Marae) will succeed Craig as Chair of AGL and replaces Sam Mikaere as the Te Nehenehenui appointed representative.
“Our trustees and members bring a wealth of knowledge, lived experience and commitment to our long term strategy, Te Kawau Rukuroa. These appointments reflect the strength of our people and collective ability to deliver meaningful outcomes for our iwi.”
For Waihikurangi, we would like to inform our people that Dave Letele (Te Kōpua Marae) has stepped down from Waihikurangi Trust, the charitable arm of Te Nehenehenui, after two years of service.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the dedication and insights Dave has brought to Waihikurangi. His contribution has helped shape the direction of our mahi and improve wellbeing outcomes for our whānau” says Mr Douglas.
To cover this role in the interim, Nanaia Mahuta (Te Kūiti Pā), has been appointed as an interim trustee of Waihikurangi.
Nanaia brings an extensive career in government and iwi engagement and offers expertise across Crown–iwi relationships and social impact outcomes. Her experience will complement the existing strengths of Waihikurangi Trust, supporting a well-rounded and forward-focused governance group.
Mr Douglas said both Waihikurangi Trust and AGL will continue to build momentum across our strategic priorities and welcomes the appointments, emphasising the value of strong, diverse leadership across the organisation.
Te Nehenehenui will be going to market for the independent directors role on AGL in April and the Waihikurangi trustee role in October, after Hui ā-Tau.
All appointments and transitions will take effect from 1 April 2026. Nanaia Mahuta’s interim role will be held for the remaining term, through to March 31st 2027.
