TE KIRIKIRI

Te Kūiti Housing Project

Te Kirikiri is a 40-home affordable rental housing project located between Mangarino Street and Esplanade in Te Kūiti.

The development will be situated on a 3.4-hectare acquired by Te Nehenehenui from Waitomo District Council With funding support from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. This project is set to transform under-utilised whenua (land) into a community hub for our people.

The name ‘Te Kirikiri’ has been gifted by local hapū, Ngāti Rōrā, and carries the original name of the whenua, recognising the connection and history of those who once lived in the area.

The 5-year Punga phase of Te Kawau Rukuroa includes a key focus of supporting 200 Maniapoto whānau to access safe, secure, quality homes, of which an affordable rental housing scheme is crucial to supporting whānau into housing in an affordable manner.

The development itself will include a variation of housing options including:

  • 20 accessible two-bedroom homes
  • 8 three-bedroom homes
  • 12 four-bedroom homes

The range of homes will be designed to meet the diverse needs of whānau, from kaumātua to young families. This project enables immediate housing needs to be addressed while building long-term capability for housing delivery across the rohe.

We aim for construction to commence in 2026, with the intention of homes being ready for whānau to move in from July 2027.

Join ‘Matakūmea – a space for Maniapoto-affiliated business owners to connect, grow capability, and access future opportunities that support pākihi Maniapoto to thrive.
