Te Nehenehenui has formally recognised its relationship with Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato through a Whakapiringa Ngākau (Memorandum of Understanding).

The agreement between the University of Waikato and Te Nehenehenui, the Post-Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) on behalf of Maniapoto, aims to strengthen an existing relationship while establishing principles to guide the two groups in further enhancing their enduring collaboration.

The signing took place on August 31st, when the Te Nehenehenui Board welcomed Chancellor, Dame Susan Jean Hassall DNZM JP, alongside Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Neil Quigley, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori, Sarah-Jane Tiakiwai.

Te Nehenehenui Group Chief Executive Sam Mikaere says the Whakapiringa Ngākau provides the foundation for purposeful, regular engagement between the tertiary education provider and Te Nehenehenui, helping them achieve their respective aspirations for Maniapoto.

“The agreement paves the way for long-term partnership, engagement, and collaboration to support Maniapoto educational, cultural, and socio-economic aspirations.

“By working with the university, we can open up further options around curation of taonga, reo proficiency, and continued education aspirations of our people.”

Formalizing this relationship aligns with the aspirations set within Te Kawau Rukuroa, the Te Nehenehenui 2050 long-term strategy.

It also reflects a shared commitment to improving outcomes for Maniapoto through higher education, strengthening connections between tauira and iwi, supporting Mātauranga Māori, and ensuring Maniapoto perspectives are reflected within the University’s strategic and operational environment.
